Mar 3, 2021 | Rep. Omar’s Statement on the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act
WASHINGTON—Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) released the following statement on the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. This bill addresses police brutality in the wake of the killing of George Floyd, who was murdered in her Minnesota district. It will eliminate qualified immunity for law enforcement, ban chokeholds, and mandate data collection on police encounters.
Rep. Omar presided as speaker pro tempore during debate of the bill and gave remarks. You can view her speech here.
“Today, the House took vital steps to begin to address police brutality,” said Rep. Omar. “Nine months ago, our community watched in horror as a police officer took the life of another innocent Black man—George Floyd. His murder led to a long overdue racial justice reckoning across the country, and reawakened deep pain that our community has felt for decades. Time and time again, we have witnessed law enforcement abuse their power. This legislation will begin to mend the systemic injustices embedded within our criminal justice system. But our movement for an America that lives up to its promise has only just begun. We must continue to march, vote, organize, and raise our voices in order to dismantle systemic racism wherever we find it.”
